  • Hierarchy of Hazard control is a system used in certain industries to minimise or eliminate exposure to hazards.
  • The concept is taught to managers and promoted as a standard practice in the work place.
  • The hierarchy of hazard controls are in order of decreasing effectiveness.

5 Levels of the Hierarchy

1.Elimination –

  • Removing the hazard from the work place.
  • Most effective way to control a risk.
  • Should be used whenever possible.

2.Substitution –

  • Substituting one chemical for another less harmful chemical.
  • E.G, Instead of using benzene (causes cancer) consider ketones, toluene.

3. Engineering –

  • Engineering controls are methods that are built into the design of a plant, equipment or process to minimize the hazard.
  • Types of engineering controls are: Process control; Enclosure and/or isolation of emission source; and Ventilation.

4. Administrative Controls –

  • Adopting standard operating procedures or safe work practices.
  • Providing appropriate training.
  • Information to reduce the potential for harm and/or adverse health effects to person.
  • Isolation and permit to work procedures are examples of administrative controls.

5. Personal Protective Equipment –

  • Includes: Gloves; glasses; earmuffs; aprons; safety footwear; masks.
  • Usually used in conjunction with one or more of the other control measures
