- Hierarchy of Hazard control is a system used in certain industries to minimise or eliminate exposure to hazards.
- The concept is taught to managers and promoted as a standard practice in the work place.
- The hierarchy of hazard controls are in order of decreasing effectiveness.
5 Levels of the Hierarchy
1.Elimination –
- Removing the hazard from the work place.
- Most effective way to control a risk.
- Should be used whenever possible.
2.Substitution –
- Substituting one chemical for another less harmful chemical.
- E.G, Instead of using benzene (causes cancer) consider ketones, toluene.
3. Engineering –
- Engineering controls are methods that are built into the design of a plant, equipment or process to minimize the hazard.
- Types of engineering controls are: Process control; Enclosure and/or isolation of emission source; and Ventilation.
4. Administrative Controls –
- Adopting standard operating procedures or safe work practices.
- Providing appropriate training.
- Information to reduce the potential for harm and/or adverse health effects to person.
- Isolation and permit to work procedures are examples of administrative controls.
5. Personal Protective Equipment –
- Includes: Gloves; glasses; earmuffs; aprons; safety footwear; masks.
- Usually used in conjunction with one or more of the other control measures
